Mavericks, Mystics, and Misfits – Americans Against the Grain
"Mavericks" takes the reader on a journey across American history through the life stories of exceptional men and women who challenged the conventions of their times. The stories begin in Puritan New England with Roger Williams and end on a permaculture farm in Ventura County, California. Along the way, we visit the Revolutionary War through the writings of Thomas Paine, travel west with Josiah Gregg, accompany the slaves William and Ellen Craft on their escape from Georgia in 1848, ponder the Industrial Revolution with Thorstein Veblen, join Thomas Merton in a Trappist monastery, land on the beach at Anzio with Native American war hero Brummett Echohawk, and study the murals of the Chicana artist Judy Baca. The book gives a portrait of America and its diverse origins across time and space.
About Arthur Hoyle (Los Angeles, California Author)
Arthur Hoyle is a writer, educator, and independent filmmaker. His documentary films have won numerous awards and have aired on PBS, and he received a media grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Before becoming an author, he produced corporate communications materials in print and video for a broad array of clients. He received Bachelors and Masters Degrees in English from the University of California, Los Angeles, and taught English, coached tennis, and served as an administrator in independent schools. He currently volunteers as a naturalist in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, leading interpretive walks on Chumash Indian culture. His portrait of America, Mavericks, Mystics, and Misfits: Americans Against the Grain, was published March 17, 2020 by Sunbury Press. He lives in Pacific Palisades, California.
