Here at last is a book for kids that describes the nuts and bolts, and dreams and schemes that went into building the Mackinac Bridge. Once thought impossible, Mighty Mac now spans five miles of open water, connecting Michigan's two peninsulas.

In Mighty Mac, The Bridge That Michigan Built, you'll meet Prentiss Brown, the Senator who wouldn't let the dream die. You'll be inspired by David Steinman who designed a "poem stretched across the stream", and the workers: electricians, ironworkers, scuba divers and hundreds more, who built it, giving us Mighty Mac, one of the world's longest, and surely most beautiful, suspension bridges. You'll also learn about different types of bridges and the special equipment, like Gizmo, that was needed to build piers 120 feet beneath the water's surface.

Join us in the celebrating the bridge that Michigan built.

About Jacquie Sewell (Grand Rapids, Michigan Author)

Jacquie Sewell

Jacquie was born in Green Bay, Wisconsin and began creating stories before she could even write. Thankfully her mom was excellent at taking dictation. Jacquie's earliest writings were fiction but the opportunity to freelance for Lansing City Limits magazine introduced her to the fascinating world of non-fiction and helped her hone her writing skills.

Jacquie's love of children and fascination with the natural world inspire her to write children's picture books. She believes picture books are the perfect venue to introduce kids (and adults) to the wonders all around them and to the courageous people who've explored, protected, and enriched our world.

Working as a children's librarian allows Jacquie to combine her love of books and children. Her debut picture book, Mighty Mac, The Bridge That Michigan Build, was written in response to a student's request for a children's book about the bridge. Finding none in print, Jacquie set out to research and write it herself. It was published in January, 2018.
