Alexio Sopholus comes home after studying for ten years at the Mage Academy. He is small and frail due to the plague that swept through his city (or polis) when he was a child leaving him an orphan. He was adopted by Malcor the local mage who recognized his potential for using magic. At the Academy, he achieved high academic acclaim in his studies. Upon his return, Alexio reacquaints himself with his childhood friends. His one goal is to take over the position of caretaker and protector of the Forest of Allund from his now-deceased master. The Forest of Allund is a place of mystery and danger that is populated by creatures of myth and legend. It is a place only a few people travel to and still fewer people return from.

When he arrives home, he finds a disgraced Amazon has taken residence in his old master's house. Although a trespasser, she seems to have forged a connection to the creature of the forest. He allows her to stay which is good. Suddenly the forest is attacked by a barbarian horde, The Zilar, that has captured a nearby polis and slaughtered or enslaved its inhabitants. These barbarians now seek domination over all the lands and will go to any extreme to achieve their goals. With help from his human and non-human friends and his growing magical powers, Alexio manages to hold the barbarians at bay. While the people offer their gratitude, the political leaders of Alexio's kingdom become suspicious of his motives and fearful of his growing power. Soon, Alexio is assaulted from all sides in his quest to protect those he cares about.

Alexio soon finds that all the morality, philosophy, ethics, and behavior taught to him are useless when someone has you at the point of a spear. Alexio's options are reduced to fight, run, or die. Alexio fights and fights hard. It is a conflict that will go against the laws of the mages, the kings, and the gods themselves. It will leave Alexio an outcast in his own land.
