Vandevert – The Hundred Year History of a Central Oregon Ranch
Vandevert tells the colorful true story of a frontier cattle ranch and the community that grew out of the wilderness around it. With bibliography, index, sixty-four photographs, and six maps and drawings.
When Vandevert Ranch was founded in 1892, Central Oregon held one person for every three square miles of land. Deschutes County did not yet exist and neither did the city of Bend. As the Vandeverts contributed to the growth of civilization around them, the ranch became a landmark and three generations of Vandeverts became beloved and respected members of the community.
Vandevert presents Bill Vandevert - cowboy, bear hunter, log home builder, part time sheriff, and father of eight children. It describes cattle and timber operations through three generations, the building of a one-room schoolhouse, nearby army training in World War II, and the development of the modern ranch with spectacular custom log homes. In clear and entertaining prose, the book relates an essential part of the Oregon story.
About Ted Haynes (Bend, Oregon Author)
Ted and his wife have loved every summer they've spent since 1996 at Vandevert Ranch on the Little Deschutes River. "Suspects" is Ted's third book set in Central Oregon.
The author is a member of the Central Oregon Writers Guild, The Deschutes County Historical Society, and Mystery Writers of America. He serves on the board of the Waterston Desert Writing Prize, awarded every year at the High Desert Museum. He swims regularly at the Juniper Swim and Fitness Center in Bend and plays golf at Sunriver and Crosswater. He has fished many of the lakes and rivers in Central Oregon, including the Deschutes, Little Deschutes, Crooked, and Fall Rivers, East Lake, and Crane Prairie.
Ted graduated from Dartmouth College and the Graduate School of Business at Stanford. He has studied writing with Lynn Stegner, Nancy Packer and Hillary Jordan at Stanford and with Tom Parker and Donna Levin at UC Berkeley.
